What are the Benefits of Microgreens?

Microgreens are a form of vegetation becoming increasingly common as a consumable product. They are typically a kind of green leaf (like rocket), a herb, or a lettuce (like red cabbage), but harvested very young (typically 10-14 days after seeding).

Healthy Eating

Research has shown that microgreens contain on average a higher nutritional content than their mature counterparts, particularly regarding vitamins, carotenoids, and antioxidants. Even though they are small, they pack a big nutritional impact into their young shoots and are an easy way to deliver lots of nutrition without eating a lot of greens, especially useful for any fussy eaters!


Due to their short growing cycle microgreens are easier to produce than other plants or vegetables. They will be ready sooner, and will also spend less time outside, vulnerable to the elements, meaning that less of the crop should be lost to diseases or damage in the ground.

Convenience and Growing Potential

Even on a small scale, microgreens are a perfect crop for any number of gardening or farming projects. If you’re growing them at home then they are much easier than a mature term crop, which are all too easy to lose track of, or spend an inordinate amount of time caring for them. Microgreens need less room to grow and only take two weeks, so they’re perfect for home gardening. They are also great for the kids as an introduction to the natural world, offering enough enticement to pique their interest, but also with the promise of delivering the outcome soon after planting.
